For the first time since 2019, the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles proudly welcomed youth from the Nagoya YMCA for a week of cultural immersion, friendship, and adventure. The YMCA’s mission transcends borders, languages, and geography. Whether in Los Angeles or Nagoya, it is our shared humanity, our compassion, and our commitment to one another that bring out the best in us. This year has been incredibly challenging for many families. As the Center for Community Well-Being, the LA Y helped make a meaningful difference this summer in the lives of many Angelenos. We provided youth with opportunities to create lifelong memories through our summer programs at Y centers, including Get Summer Free Teen Memberships, Beyond the Bell, Teen Nights, Youth Institute, and various youth programs. For many, sleepaway camp is a cherished annual tradition. This year, youth returned to camp, where they rekindled old friendships and formed new ones under the wilderness sky. Many of our Teen Program Directors, staff, and camp volunteers also shared in this joy, creating unforgettable experiences alongside the campers. Our social impact extended across Los Angeles. We opened our centers across LA County as collection sites, where communities came together to donate food and essential items. These were delivered to individuals who were unable to leave their homes, making a meaningful difference during uncertain times. We also saw an outpouring of support from volunteers, whose efforts overlapped across all areas of our summer impact. They helped with camp, supported our collection centers, and participated in multiple Together In Service and center-based volunteer projects, all contributing to positive change in the lives of many. As the Center for Community Well-Being, we remain a pillar of support for all communities across Los Angeles. Be Well. Do Good. Facilitated by our incredible partners—the Institute for Nonviolence Los Angeles and Kids Managing Conflict—dialogue circles provided a safe, supportive space for young people to address pressing issues impacting our communities. This year’s discussions included the recent immigration raids that have caused fear and uncertainty for many Los Angeles residents. Rather than taking a political stance, the conversations focused on our shared humanity—how to show compassion, offer support, and meet the needs of neighbors who may be feeling vulnerable, anxious, or isolated. Teens explored practical ways to stand in solidarity, build trust, and create welcoming environments for all. This approach aligns with our broader Center for Community Well-Being strategy: meeting individuals where they are, fostering belonging, and ensuring access to support.
