Earlier this year, Anna came to the Y with a goal: to feel confident in the water and complete the Escape the Cape Sprint Triathlon. While she had the drive, she was still nervous about her stroke and unsure if she could swim the full distance. Through lessons with our Metuchen swim lesson coordinator, Dawn Willemsen, they worked together to build not only her technique but also her confidence. Focusing on stabilizing her stroke, improving efficiency, and preparing alternative breathing patterns. And when race day came… she rocked it! She not only completed the triathlon but also came out of the water amazed at what she had accomplished. That moment—her pride, her joy, her disbelief that she had done it—is what made it all so worth it. We are so proud of you, Anna. Congratulations to Lillian Kupersmit of Metuchen! She was awarded the 2025 Ryan Patterson Memorial Scholarship Award. Created in honor of beloved YMCA swim coach Ryan Marie Patterson, this $2,000 scholarship recognizes students who lead with kindness, strive for excellence and make a lasting impact in their communities. Lilly is all that and more. A standout at Metuchen High School, she excelled in academics, co-founded the Teen Writing Club at the Metuchen Library, volunteered as a tutor, served on Congressman Pallone’s Youth Advisory Council and helped expand civic engagement as a youth leader. In the fall, Lilly is attending Davidson College in North Carolina with plans to major in English. We can't wait to see all the amazing things she'll do!
