The Climate Change Commission 's latest emissions reduction monitoring report is out today – there's a lot of noise out there at the moment, so here's our take: Yes, New Zealand is making progress. Emissions are continuing to come down. We’re seeing more renewable energy generation, process heat conversions, clean transport, and electrification as industry starts to move away from coal and gas. And it’s starting to show more in the emissions data. The key now is to build on that momentum – the next steps are crucial for delivery. But momentum is fragile. There are real-world risks and barriers that we still need to tackle – plus, parts of the current plan rely on things that may not deliver. So the Commission has recommended to the Government that they take targeted action. This includes: - Strengthening the NZ ETS - Accelerating renewable generation and clean transport - Supporting and backing farmers with the tools that work for them. Going further is in New Zealand's best interests. #ClimateAction and economic opportunities go hand-in-hand. There’s growing global evidence that countries investing in clean technology and renewable energy are not only cutting emissions, they’re also boosting productivity, creating jobs, building resilience, and unlocking long-term growth. This is about more than emissions reductions. It's about affordability, resilience and retaining our future competitive edge.
