Bonnie Heiple

The Environmental Council of the States (ECOS) is the national nonprofit, nonpartisan association of state and territorial environmental agency leaders. The purpose of ECOS is to improve the capability of state environmental agencies and their leaders to protect and improve human health and the environment of the United States of America.

I serve on the Board of Trustees for the Women's Bar Foundation, which ensures access to justice by coordinating pro bono legal counseling and full representation in civil legal matters that disproportionately affect low-income women and children.

I serve on the ALA Leadership Board representing Massachusetts, and chair the Nominating Committee of the Board. I previously served on the Connecticut Leadership Board.

I chaired ABA Section on Energy, Environment & Resource's Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. in October 2023, for which I received the ABA Section Chair's Award for Outstanding Contribution. I also served on the Planning Committees for SEER Conferences in Denver (2023) and Nashville (2022).

I served as Legal Director on the Boston Board of the Women's Energy Network, a global organization focused on providing networking opportunities, including through community service events, and fostering career and leadership development for women who work in energy.

I chaired the ABA Energy Infrastructure, Siting, and Reliability Committee, and served as co-chair for the 2018-2019 ABA year. I was selected for the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources Leadership Program in 2017-2018.

I chaired the Board of Young Professionals in Energy, a global non-profit organization with more than 40,000 members worldwide, and over 2,000 members in its Boston chapter. By providing a forum for networking and career development through social, educational and civic service opportunities, YPE aims to facilitate the advancement of young professionals in the energy industry.

I served on the Board of Editors of the Boston Bar Journal, the peer reviewed publication of the Boston Bar Association with more than 12,000 attorney subscribers. The Journal is published quarterly, and presents timely information, analysis, and opinions in nearly every practice area by authors ranging from attorneys to judges and others interested in the development of the law. I co-chaired a BBA Committee coordinating programming on issues and developments relating to federal and Massachusetts laws governing oil, hazardous materials, and hazardous waste, including CERCLA and Chapter 21E.

I am active at my alma mater, the Boston University School of Law, including by mentoring first-year law students and serving as a moot court judge. At the invitation of former professors, I have spoken to environmental law classes and participated in a retreat convened by the Dean of Students to map out the future of the law school and its curriculum.

I represented victims of domestic violence in divorce and other proceedings in partnership with the Women’s Bar Foundation Family Law Project. As part of the Volunteer Lawyers Project, I assisted low-income, unrepresented tenants and landlords and tenants in housing matters in Boston Housing Court (Eastern Div.).
