Christopher Haig found a massive opportunity in a technology most people had written off. His secret? Applying it to the right market. In the latest Medsider episode, I spoke with Christopher Haig, CEO of Efemoral Medical, who took bioresorbable scaffold technology that had been developed for coronary use — and turned it into a promising treatment for peripheral disease. Adoption of the technology for coronary applications hasn’t met expectations. A lot of that has to do with the fact that drug-eluting stents, the current standard of care, already have very high success rates.   But peripheral arterial disease is a different story. As Chris explained in our conversation: "If you have the same disease in your leg, the outcomes from stenting or ballooning are just not very good." Chris and co-founder Dr. Lewis Schwartz spotted the opportunity — and made three strategic moves to meet a large, unmet clinical need: 1️⃣ Established early protection: First, they secured 20 patents across major markets. "I remember when we got our first patent — it felt like it would never come," Chris told me. 2️⃣ Picked trial sites for data quality: A key reason they selected Australia and New Zealand for clinical trials was because patients there "take their consent very seriously" and return for long-term follow-up — extremely helpful for tracking outcomes. 3️⃣ Let physician investors validate: They raised $10M from angels, many of them doctors. "The fact that we have physicians investing in us is a strong signal," Chris shared. 💡 The results: 36 patients implanted, zero complications, no reinterventions at six months.
