What FBI Negotiation Tactics and Crisis Communications Taught Me About Convincing Others Last week, I had the rare opportunity to learn directly from Vistage Worldwide, Inc. speakers Chip Massey, a former FBI hostage negotiator, and Adele Gambardella, an award-winning crisis communications expert. What I walked away with wasn’t just communication tactics—it was a full-on mindset shift. The big idea? It’s not about convincing people of your ideas. It’s about creating the conditions where they convince themselves. Here were my biggest takeaways: * Start with a point of agreement, not your strongest argument. Leading with your best pitch too early triggers resistance. * Identify your audience’s “convincer type”—are they more emotional or fact-based? Speak their language, not yours. * Master forensic listening. Analyze conversations after they happen to uncover the emotional cues, repeated patterns, and unspoken doubts that reveal how to truly connect. * Use FUD strategically—fear, uncertainty, and doubt—to help people question their assumptions in a respectful, intentional way. * Create open loops. Leave your audience curious. When people feel like something is unresolved, they’re more engaged—and more open. What I appreciated most was how seamlessly this framework applies to leadership, coaching, and selling ideas in high-stakes environments. It’s about trust, presence, and understanding how people make decisions, not how we wish they would.
