A recent Hopelab survey found that 37% of young people said media use strongly supports their well-being. That's a significant data point that came up during last month's ISRII Scientific Meeting panel on Supporting Youth Through Digital Interventions. David Ball, Head of Well-being at SecondMuse, was on the panel and made a point that's been sticking with me, in the startup world, innovation moves faster than evidence. The real challenge is figuring out which ideas will actually create measurable change. His take was that impact measurement isn't just checking a box. It's a competitive advantage. When digital mental health solutions are grounded in research and evaluation, they bridge the gap between academic rigor and market viability, and they're more likely to genuinely help the people they're built for. To support this, David and the Headstream Innovation team developed the Impact Navigator, a tool that sets standards for measuring how digital technologies affect youth wellbeing. When you combine the speed and creativity of startups with the discipline of academic evidence, you get smarter innovation. Another key takeaway from this conversation and many others is that young people need to be active co-creators, not passive users. When youth are directly involved in designing, developing, and evaluating mental health tools, the solutions reflect lived experience.
