“It was a pleasure working with Matt for around 7 months at Event Store. As VP of Engineering, he developed strong cross-functional relationships with all of us in Marketing; for me as Content Manager, his passion for the product and can-do attitude was refreshing and certainly led to clearer objectives for the wider team and a drive to execute. It can often be challenging as a Marketer to persuade technical individuals of our value, where we are usually creatives rather than technical and experts in the customer rather than the subject; I found Matt however to be one of those people who just "gets" it. “I had the privilege of working under Matt's leadership during his tenure as the VP of Engineering at Event Store. In this role, he oversaw all teams involved in software engineering, support and documentation. During this time, Matt successfully introduced formal processes and procedures (such as planning cycles) to teams within a startup environment that historically resisted such changes. This transformation significantly enhanced our productivity and delivery speed. As a boss, Matt provided outstanding feedback and guidance, offering practical tips and advice that have greatly benefited my professional journey. He excels in setting clear expectations for deliverables and uses precise and concise language, even in the midst of the often chaotic and lengthy meetings common in large technical teams implementing major changes. Matt is also a thought-leader who gave talks at multiple conferences and appeared in various company videos. I got the sense he could step in and help with the code or design at a moment's notice if needed, and quite often he proved a considerable resource when I had questions about event-sourcing and other quandaries faced by the team. Despite that, Matt was also a supportive and flexible leader who allowed his direct reports to take the lead whenever possible, creating an environment that empowered us to shape our work and achieve personal growth. Matt is a great active listener. I have more than a few ideas that are a bit unorthodox which I have struggled to discuss with bosses in the past. In these areas Matt made it a point to understand the core of where I was coming from until he could often state my case better than I could, and from there made sure my concerns were not left behind as we navigated towards the future.
