INSURANCE BLOG – SALES IS A CONTACT SPORT Most young guns & many experienced salespeople don’t understand that SALES IS A CONTACT SPORT. And, I’m not using the word “CONTACT” in the sense of reaching out to people. I’m using it in the way we describe professional football. If you work for or report to someone who has never had to battle for a piece of new business or to save/secure a renewal order, don’t bother asking them about this as they will be clueless. Only those who have battled both inside & outside the sales funnel understand. Sales trainers preach ad nauseam about meeting people, establishing relationships, getting them to like & trust you, etc. etc. Even I’ve been guilty of peddling such advice as I recently responded to another post about prospecting when I said something like, “My goal in prospecting was simply to make a new friend.” But that advice doesn’t relate to the late-stage sales cycle where orders (and commission checks) are won & lost. You see, no matter what product or service you are peddling, the real selling doesn’t begin until AFTER your proposal has been delivered. Everything before that is just heavy petting. After presenting, the most important thing you need to do is create multiple valid reasons giving you license to follow up w/ agreement from the prospect that they will take your call & not send you to voice mail hell. I promise you, if you deliver a proposal & walk out of the room without getting this agreement, you just waived the white flag of surrender. And, finally, sometimes you simply have to make your prospects feel so uncomfortable (think them saying to themselves, “The world as I know it will end if I don’t buy what Michael is selling.”) that they ultimately decide to buy from you, irrespective of whether they really like you or not. The strategy that some brokers employ to protect their position on an account by only releasing the renewal quotes to their clients at the last day or two prior to a renewal may not always achieve the intended results. I have heard many complain about this practice and it often leads to opportunities for consultants, but recently I saw it backfire in another way. A client of mine was indecisive about moving their many properties to a master program for a variety of reasons, but what spurred them to go ahead with it last week was the late delivery of renewal quotes for a few of their properties that shared a common expiration date. This was the modus operandi of the broker for those policies, and upon informing him of client's decision to move to a master program brokered by another agency due to the knowledge that their incumbent carriers were either nonrenewing or slapping on significant increases on renewal, the broker complained to me that client should not have made their decision without seeing the alternative quote options he had obtained on their behalf, but had not shared as of two days prior to the expiration date of the current policies!
