The following are the main reasons why direct traffic is increasing: 1) Ad blockers can cause referrer data to drop, causing traffic to be recorded as direct traffic. 2) One or more URLs of your marketing campaigns are incorrectly tagged. 3) Dark Social - Users sharing your link via messenger (like 'WhatsApp') or in private social media groups. 4) GA4 tracking code is missing or does not fire on one or more pages. . . Use the following methods to reduce direct traffic in GA4: 1) Tag the URLs of all marketing campaigns. Whenever a referrer is dropped, GA4 cannot determine the origin of the traffic source and will report that traffic as direct traffic. SEO ADVICE: ⚠ 1. Do NOT rely on canonical tags, they are NOT arbritary, Google does not have to obey them ⚠ 2. Make it so that canonical tags AREN'T relied on as much as possible you can do this by limiting scenarios where they are required, things you can do include: ➤ Avoid internal linking to parameter driven URLS (where possible) ➤ Avoid internal links to tracking parameters where possible i.e. UTMs ➤ Avoid inconsistent internal links i.e trailing vs non trailing slash ➤ Ensure URL handling policies are functional i.e. Single hop 301S on non standard protocol i.e. non WWW to WWW / vice versa Handling of trailing slashes ➤ Block non contributory parameter groups via robots.txt i.e. if certain parameter groups bring no traffic, have no external links ➤ Manage your tech stack, ensuring that things such as cycling or repetitive URL paths are not possible (where a canonical would otherwise handle them) ➤ Eliminate internal links to canonical child pages ➤ Eliminate child canonical child pages whereever possible ⚠ 3. Avoid poor canonical configurations ➤ Do NOT canonicalise pagination series to root ➤ Do not allow dynamic page filters to generate lots of variant URLS with a single point of reference for canonical ➤ Do not canonicalise to blocked pages (robots or meta robots) ➤ Ensure self referencing canonicals handle appended parameters with self referencing and that they aren't dynamically following the URL ➤ Ensure canonical targets are HTTP 200 and not part of redirects/redirect chains ➤ Ensure canonical is consistent with protocol or sub domain ➤ Avoid duplicate canonical tags or canonicals that are in the output dom via iframe ➤ Avoid placing canonicals outside of the <HEAD> ➤ Ensure CANONICAL is output as part of the original DOM request and not dynamically alltered after initial dom request ➤ If using HREFLANG, the canonicals should be self referencing Websites SHOULDN'T NEED canonical tags in MOST INSTANCES - they shouldn't be relied on. Of course, having them present IS best practice as long as they are implemented correctly. Here's what I try to do: 1. Eliminate reasons that allow for canonical CHILD URLS to exist 2. I manage parameters as best as possible so that they are clearly defined as either non indexable or, if indexable, I look at the relationship between the page and the altered page with canonical output i.e. filtering in eCommerce categories 3. I remove/eliminate internal linking to canonical child URLS as much as possible - I evaluate whether the canonical CHILD URLS can be eliminated altogether 4. I clear up inconsistent internal linking to negate canonical reliance and redirect reliance 5. I eliminate / consolidate pages highly similar as opposed to canonicalising 6. I ensure canonicals exhibit the correct behaviour i.e. when URLS are inconsistent or where random query strings are appended 7. I remove canonicals on pagination series #SEO
