Position Summary

The Associate Vice President, Human Resources is a people-focused visionary leader with both strategic and tactical responsibilities. Supporting NFHA’s employees who are committed to advancing fair housing, this vital position will report to the Chief Operating Officer and be a key member of NFHA’s leadership. The incumbent will plan, lead, direct, develop, and oversee the coordination of initiatives that enhance the overall employee experience and foster a positive organizational culture, including recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and learning and development, among others, to ensure that HR practices align with our mission, values, and goals. This position does not supervise any professional staff.

Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement people and culture strategies that support NFHA’s mission and goals
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the executive team on all matters related to people and culture
  • Lead efforts to create an inclusive, diverse, and equitable workplace culture

Talent Acquisition and Management

  • Oversee the recruitment and hiring process to ensure the organization attracts and retains top talent.
  • Develop and implement policies and practices that support a diverse workforce and equitable workplace
  • Develop and implement effective onboarding and orientation programs for new employees
  • Oversee and provide support to people managers for the organization-wide performance management cycles, including goal setting, performance reviews, and development plans

Employee Relations and Engagement

  • Foster a positive work environment by promoting employee engagement, recognition, and well-being initiatives
  • Address and resolve employee relations issues, ensuring fair and consistent application of policies
  • Conduct regular employee surveys and feedback sessions to assess and improve workplace culture

Learning and Development

  • Develop and implement training and development programs that enhance employee skills and leadership capabilities
  • Promote continuous learning and professional growth opportunities for all employees
  • Support leadership development and succession planning initiatives

HR Operations and Compliance

  • Oversee HR operations, including payroll, benefits administration, and HRIS management
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
  • Develop and implement HR policies and procedures that align with best practices and organizational needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive HR experience, with a focus on people and culture, and at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Professional HR certification (e.g., SHRM-SCP, SPHR) strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, to support NFHA’s national employee base. Experience with a national remote employee base is preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Strong business acumen and analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with HRIS and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proven ability to work effectively in culturally and ethnically diverse environments
  • Strong and demonstrated commitment to justice, civil rights, and equity.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, unsupervised environment.
  • Ability to represent NFHA in a professional and exceptional manner.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% annually.

The salary range for this role is between $120,000 - $140,000 annually. Salary is commensurate with experience. NFHA offers:
