Compensation range: $225,000–$260,000 per annum
Work site: On-site (Washington, D.C., office)
Summary
American Progress comprises two tax-exempt mission-driven organizations—the Center for American Progress and the Center for American Progress Action Fund—and is dedicated to improving the lives of Americans through ideas and action. American Progress is creating an affirmative vision for America—a vision that policymakers, legislators, and thought leaders can use to shape the national debate, build durable political power, and drive lasting change. The Executive Vice President, Policy will work closely with the President and CEO and will generate and develop new policy ideas and products, lead American Progress’ policy teams, and provide strategic consultation and analysis on issues affecting the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Generate and develop new policy ideas and build broad-based support for American Progress’ policy initiatives.
- Supervise American Progress’ policy teams and manage all policy projects’ workflow, goals, staffing, and funding priorities.
- Develop long-term and strategic planning and determine policy priorities.
- Represent American Progress with internal and external stakeholders, including members of the media, and develop strategic programs and policy initiatives.
- Fundraise for the institution and specific projects.
- Coordinate and integrate the activities of department heads and staff in the development and implementation of policy and products.
- Manage and build crosscutting policies and initiatives across teams and senior fellows.
- Serve on the Executive Committee and as a key liaison between staff and the Board of Directors.
- Provide policy analysis and strategic consultation to the President and CEO and to executive management.
- Build and manage strong individual and foundation fundraising relationships.
- Direct fundraising with policy department heads in support of teams or projects.
- Oversee the preparation of reports, briefings, presentations, and responses on American Progress’ policy issues.
- Identify and capitalize on areas of opportunity internally and externally in support of American Progress’ mission.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Advanced degree and 10 years of professional experience in political, legislative, government, and/or nonprofit organizations required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to set and achieve strategic priorities for a large, multifaceted team of policy personnel.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage many projects with competing priorities, delegate responsibilities, and collaborate with others as needed to achieve success in all areas.
- Experience tracking and managing budgets.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide group of employees, partners, and funders.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop strategic, long-term plans and implement them successfully.
- Ability to raise funds for projects and initiatives.
- Commitment to American Progress’ goals and mission.
American Progress offers a full and competitive benefits package. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. This position has a salary range of $225,000–$260,000 per annum. Final salary may be above the posted range commensurate with experience.
