Position Summary
Obtains appropriate specimen by venipuncture, MMH breath test, micropuncture or oral swab from all patient age groups in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings for laboratory test analysis. Performs all clerical functions required to maintain work area in a customer focused, efficient manner. Correctly orders test information into the LIS.
Education/Certification
High school diploma or equivalent required.
No Certification required, PBT (ASCP) preferred.
Experience
One (1) year full time phlebotomy experience preferred.
Competencies
3rd shift Phlebotomist incumbents will be cross-trained in Lab Aide duties to supplement business needs on an as-needed basis only.
Certain designated assignments require the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license (appropriate as outlined in the Eastern Connecticut Health Network’s Environment of Care Safety Policies and Procedures #110) maintain a driving record free of any violations and pass a safe driving educational program upon hire and annually thereafter.

Collects all specimens by various phlebotomy methods for all age groups within the institution in an efficient and appropriate manner. Follow designated collection procedure and specimen requirements.
May perform oral swab collection as required for specific laboratory testing.
Correctly pre-registers patients selecting accurate account number and ordering physician. Correctly orders requested tests in laboratory computer system.
Performs therapeutic phlebotomies as specified in procedure (MMH).
Participates in the training of new employees and students as required.
Instructs patients that require special testing or special specimen collection in the proper procedures to follow. Correctly performs timed tests.
Performs required clerical functions (answering phones, filing) to maintain work area in a customer focused, efficient manner.
Maintains a commitment to continue professional growth and development.
Labels all tubes and hardcopy documentation in appropriate manner as evidenced by supervisor and requires no recollection of improperly labeled specimens.
Performs nursing home and house calls in an efficient and courteous manner. Monitors the hospital vehicle performance and fuel level as exhibited by reporting any vehicle malfunction and keeping and adequate supply of fuel.
Complies with all infection control, epidemiology and laboratory safety policies at all times, keeps all work areas clean and disinfected.
Checks name band and/or identifies patient according to laboratory procedures and observes all cautionary notations (i.e., restricted limb use, allergies, ect.)
Stocks phlebotomy supplies daily, monitor and replace sharps containers when indicated. Puts away incoming supplies in appropriate areas and fills supply orders for offsite locations as requested. Informs supervisor of any low supply level and defective or malfunctioning equipment and supplies. Checks for outdates in assigned collection tray.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
