Position Overview
The Society for Science is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant who will manage month-end, quarterly and year end closing; prepare financial reports and statements; oversee the review, tracking, and accounting for grants and sponsorships; assist in the management and oversight of the daily operations of Society accounting department, including A/P, Payroll, A/R, G/L; assist in the documentation of processes, accounting policies and procedures; monitoring and analyzing various aspects of the business operations; ensure timely filing and compliance with regulatory agencies (IRS, DC Gov, etc.); participate in periodic planning processes like the annual budget.
Responsibilities
Manage the program grants, including working directly with Program Managers to accurately record program liabilities for grants and awards
Provide detailed analysis and reporting on grant performance
Review and code program expenses to the appropriate general ledger accounts
Prepare and enter journal entries daily
Manage and reconcile the net assets monthly
Analyze and reconcile assigned general ledger accounts on a monthly basis (including cash, investments, contributions revenue, and magazine-related accounts)
Prepare drafts of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Perform account analysis, budget reviews, and variance analysis
Assist in developing the annual budget and periodic forecasts
Assist with preparation for financial audits and other reports, as needed
Perform analysis and compilation of information necessary for filing required tax returns including but not limited to Form 990 and 990-T, 941, and 1042, DC Return, and Canadian GST
Cross-train on other accounting functions such as A/P and payroll to serve as backup, as needed
Identify and implement process improvements
Assist with administrative duties, as needed
Other duties, as may be assigned
Qualifications
Experience in budgeting and forecasting, including performing detailed analysis and variance explanations
Advanced skills using spreadsheet (Excel), word processing and other Microsoft office software
Detail-oriented and able to handle multiple task
Experience with not-for-profit and grant accounting
Required Education And Experience
Bachelor's degree in business-related field with preference in Accounting or Finance
3 to 5 years in Senior Accountant role with related experience in G/L, A/P, A/R, and payroll functions
Experience working with accounting systems
Affinity for the mission of the Society for Science
Exceptional communications skills, both written and verbal
Ability to develop rapport with colleagues and external clients

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee usually works in an office setting. Our office is located near the Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metro stations. Society for Science is operating on a hybrid work schedule. This position is based in the DC metropolitan area.
Position Type and Expected Hours
This is a full-time (37.5 hr/wk), exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal office hours of the Society. The normal business hours of the Society are 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. EST, with core hours of 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. EST.
Salary
The salary range is $80,000 - $85,000.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
