The Senior Tax Accountant is a key member of the Corporate Accounting team, responsible for managing the bank’s tax compliance and reporting functions. This role is responsible for maintaining adherence to U.S. federal, state, and local tax regulations, including those specific to payroll and cooperative banking institutions. The Senior Tax Accountant plays a critical role in assisting with the preparation and review of tax filings, analyzing financial data for tax implications, and supporting audits and internal controls.
This position requires strong technical expertise in tax accounting, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate across departments and with external advisors. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to accuracy, integrity, and continuous improvement, contributing to the bank’s financial health and regulatory compliance.
Reporting to the SVP of Accounting Operations & Tax, the Senior Tax Accountant will also support strategic initiatives such as tax planning, forecasting, and budgeting, while embodying the bank’s core values of customer focus, accountability, collaboration, empowerment, inspiration, and integrity.
1. Daily responsibilities of the Senior Tax Accountant (70%): - Support the preparation and filing of federal, state, and local income and franchise tax returns by providing necessary reports, reconciling filings to the general ledger, answering questions and collaborating with third-party advisors. - Prepare and update quarterly state and federal tax provisions. - Calculate state apportionments vital to state tax calculations - Prepare patronage refund reconciliation including tax implications and process documentation - Assist in the annual federal and state return-to-provision reconciliation. - Analyze state and local filing requirements. - Research tax issues and stay current on tax law changes and regulations. - Respond to tax-related notices and internal requests and assist with tax audits. - Process quarterly estimated tax payments to various states. - Assist the Accounting Department in the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes by preparing and reviewing tax accruals and the patronage calculation. - Thoroughly document all tax team processes and decisions with policies and relevant carryforward notes. - Support the preparation of tax provisions and analysis of deferred tax assets and liabilities; prepare tax accounting reconciliations and journal entries. - Prepare tax meeting minutes and document any tax positions. - Reconcile payroll related accounts to the general ledger after each pay cycle. - Prepare monthly payroll benefit reconciliations
- Collaborate with other departments and external advisors and consultants.
2. Support tax, regulatory, census and financial reporting through the analysis and preparation of monthly and quarterly schedules and annual footnote disclosures. (15%)
3. Liaise with internal and external auditors to facilitate audits and ensure compliance with tax, regulatory, and banking requirements. Assist with audits and internal controls. (10%)
4. Assist with tax planning, tax expense forecasting & budgeting, and various other tax and patronage projects. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications Include:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (must have taken courses in advanced accounting and taxation); Master's degree in taxation preferred. CPA or CPA Candidate a plus.
- 4+ years of tax accounting, public accounting or experience in banking. - Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. - CPA or pursuing CPA licensure, a plus. - Experience with various tax areas including the preparation of workpapers that support tax returns
- Experience in a tax accounting position - Strong accounting skills, including experience preparing account reconciliations, adjusting journal entries, and accrual to cash conversions - Strong knowledge of tax laws and regulations - Ability to research tax and accounting guidance and stay current with changes in tax legislation. - Proficiency in financial analysis - Experience with the preparation of workpapers that support tax returns - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including expert English verbal and written skills - Attention to detail and quality orientation
