Base pay range
This role is central to shaping The Atlantic’s future. It requires an inspiring, forward-looking leader who balances innovation with operational excellence, while fostering a culture where engineers can do their best work. The VP of Engineering will play a pivotal role in developing new user experiences and evolving the systems that power our editorial, consumer revenue, and advertising teams — all in close partnership with stakeholders across Editorial, Consumer Growth, and Advertising.
This Vice President, Engineering reports to the Chief Product Officer
What You’ll Do
- Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team of 20+ staff.
- Recruit, develop, and empower technical leaders across the team.
- Play a pivotal role in defining company strategy and crafting roadmaps that drive business growth.
- Craft and communicate a compelling technical vision that aligns with our editorial and business goals.
- Drive the development of new advertising products, ensuring technical scalability and creative flexibility.
- Establish and continuously improve technical processes, delivery workflows, and engineering culture as we scale.
- Collaborate with Legal and IT Operations to set and implement data security and privacy policies across the company.
- A forward-thinking builder with both creative ambition and technical rigor - someone who can lay strong foundations, cultivate a thriving engineering culture, and champion innovation that positions us for the future.
- 8-10 years leading engineering teams, including experience managing managers and overseeing large-scale initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven success deploying test-driven development and continuous delivery practices.
- A strong understanding of emerging AI technologies and developer tools - including AI coding assistants - and the judgment to integrate them thoughtfully to boost team productivity, code quality, and innovation.
- Ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong communication and mentorship skills, with a track record of developing inclusive, resilient teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- A genuine passion for The Atlantic’s mission and journalistic values.
Salary minimum: $225,000; Salary maximum: $275,000
