Setting preferences

- [Instructor] Before we begin working in 3ds Max, we need to make a couple of adjustments to the application preferences, specifically how it displays file paths, and very importantly, how it manages colors. Let's look at file paths first. In the main menu, go to customize preferences. In that dialogue, go to the files tab. In the upper left, we see a section labeled file handling, and there's an option, convert local file paths to relative. We want to enable that. When it's on any file or directory path, we see in 3ds Max will be displayed as relative to the current project. When it's off, we will see the entire absolute path to the assets, such as a texture. That absolute path will begin with a drive letter or a network volume name. But with this setting enabled and relative paths displayed, it will be easier for us to work with projects because if we set up the project correctly, it will be self-contained and portable.
