From the course: Achieving Employee Resource Group Excellence

Popular ERG categories and penetration rates in a company

So, once organizations have Employee Resource Groups, organizations typically have between 6 to 8 ERGs. The most common employee resource groups are ERGs for Women, Black African-Americans, Military veterans, Hispanic/Latino, folks who are Asian American, people who maybe have a Disability, oftentimes we see ERGs for Young professionals, Native Americans and so on and so forth. So, those are typically the most common ERGs. Occasionally we'll see ERGs for say, sustainability efforts. We have seen some organizations that have ERGs for faith based organizations, but typically those, you know, 6 to 8 are the ones that most ERGs have. Companies, when they do have Employee Resource Groups, the minimum penetration rate that they try to achieve is 8 to 10%. So, what does that mean? That means that they want a minimum of 10% of their employees to become a member of an Employee Resource Groups. So, for example, if your organization has 10,000 employees, well, hopefully at least 1000 of those employees will become a member of your ERG. Now, ERGs can exist without hitting that threshold, but it's difficult for them to really excel because they don't have enough critical mass. Gold standard with regards to penetration rate is about 20-25%. Best in class is whenever an organization has a penetration rate for their employee resource groups, that is 30-35% and above.
