- 50 years ago, software development was probably unrecognizable to most developers. Early programmers shared terminals on large mainframe computers that occupied entire rooms, and sometimes entire floors. Most programmers actually worked for hardware manufacturers. So software was just seen as another part of manufacturing. The name software itself shows that it's just the soft piece of hardware. What this meant is that managers expected software to be developed the same way as hardware. They wanted the same process that built boats, cars, and buildings to build software. It worked this way for decades until in 1970, an engineer named Winston Royce tried to formalize the process. At the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Conference, he presented a paper describing a manufacturing process that his team was using for software.
