- Think about the last time you had to learn something new, perhaps a new project management tool for work or a new process. Did you just start doing it with little prep and adjust as you made mistakes? Or did you take detailed notes while watching a training video, or ask a coworker to walk you through it step by step? We all learn differently. So when designing training, HR pros must consider the needs of all learners. Learners are categorized in four ways: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic or tactile. Using charts, infographics, and mind maps help visual learners retain learning content. Auditory learners, on the other hand, need information shared with them verbally. Reading and writing learners recall information better when they read it and take notes. And finally, kinesthetic or tactile learners experience a better transfer of knowledge when they participate in simulations or interactive training sessions. They learn by doing.
