- [Instructor] When we think about IPsec, we most typically think of that in regard to VPNs, virtual private networks. VPNs use IPsec protocols to provide security services to traffic between two trusted systems or networks. Usually, these networks are connecting over the public internet, so VPNs are an important way for us to secure the sensitive data being transmitted. In addition to the security features offered, VPNs also offer cost savings and simplified scalability, and they also offer compatibility with a wide range of WAN link options. In the context of the SCOR exam, we need to be able to describe IPsec protocols, so we want to look at those in both site-to-site IPsec VPNs and remote-access IPsec VPNs. Site-to-site IPsec VPNs can be thought of as an extension to the classic WAN network model. This is commonly used to connect multiple sites which are geographically separated.
