Lesson 3: IPv4 address assignment, verification, and name resolution

(gentle music) - [Instructor] Here in lesson three of module number two, we're going to take a look at how an IP address gets assigned to an end device like a Microsoft Windows computer, or maybe it's a Mac running Mac os. We'll take a look at how we can do that manually by going into the various control panels and setting things up. We'll see what sorts of settings we might want to add. In addition to just an IP address, we might want to say, here's the subnet mask. Here's the default gateway. Here is the IP address of a DNS server. And while we can configure things manually, that's not very scalable if we have lots and lots of devices that need IP addresses. So we'll take a look at a much more scalable solution of IP address assignment, and that is using DHCP, the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. We'll see the four steps involved in a client getting an IP address via DHCP, and once we have our IP address and we want to go somewhere on the internet, if I'm going to a destination,…
