Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP)

Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP)

(bright music) - [Instructor] Do you remember how Cisco Discovery Protocol, or CDP, allowed us to go to one of our devices like a router or switch and see our layer two adjacent neighbors that were speaking CDP? While that was great, the challenge is CDP is a Cisco proprietary protocol. The good news is back in 2005, the IEEE released an industry standard protocol that does basically the same thing and it's called LLDP, Link Layer Discovery Protocol, and the IEEE standard is 802.1AB. And much like CDP, it's going to give us information about our Layer 2 adjacent devices that are, in this case, speaking LLDP. And these LLDP advertisements are going to be sent to a destination multicast MAC address, which is typically going to be 01-80-c2-00-00-0e. And I say typically, because if you read the standard, there are a couple of other multicast MAC addresses that could be used by LLDP, but typically this is the one you see used. And there's also an extension of LLDP I want you to know about,…
