- Now we have a new custom workflow with some standard and custom statuses added. We need to give users a way to get from one status to the next, and that's where transitions come in. Transitions move issues forward or backward in a workflow so users can accurately reflect progress. In this example, the user can use the pending transition to move from the reopen status to the pending status. In workflow diagrams, transitions are represented by arrows to, from, or between statuses. Transitions to a status are called incoming, and transitions from a status are called outgoing. For the reopen status, the incoming transition is called start progress. The outgoing transitions are pending and reopen issue. There are multiple transition types. A single forward transition moves issues to the next workflow status towards the final status. A single backward transition moves issues to a previous workflow status towards the initial status.
