- Estimating work and tracking time is available in all types of Jira projects, but I see it used most often in the software project type. Here's how it works in case your users want to leverage it. In the real world estimation helps predict and plan work, set expectations, determine cost, and communicate scope. In Jira estimates are used to determine how long an issue may take to complete and how many issues may be accomplished in a certain timeframe. There are two types of estimation, time and story points. Time estimates are entered in minutes, hours, days, or weeks. In the example, 2,400 minutes is the same as 40 hours, five days, or one work week. Enter estimates in any format. Any type of team can use this method. The other estimation method is story points.
