- [Instructor] As a support engineer, you are going to need to know how to configure IPv4 addresses, or more specifically, IPv4 configurations for your user's devices. This will involve configuring a unique IPv4 address, an appropriate subnet mask. The two of those together determine where this device resides in logical terms within the context of your network. A default gateway, which will be the device that's used for this computer to communicate with others in different subnets, and A DNS server address, or several DNS server addresses, that provide for access to name resolution services. When you're considering the configuration of an IP address, you need to consider whether or not to allocate a public IP address or a private IP address. All IPv4 devices that connect directly to the internet must have a public IPv4 address.
