- [Instructor] What is Windows Defender Firewall? Well, when you connect your device to a network, you potentially expose it to security risks. To mitigate that, you need to implement some sort of firewall. And Windows 11 comes with Windows Defender Firewall built in. It provides host-based firewall protection. So there may be other firewall devices on your network, but this protects the movement of traffic into and out of your host computer. It allows or blocks inbound and outbound traffic based on configurable rules. There are some default rules, and there is a default setting, but these can be adjusted to suit your particular needs. You can also use Windows Defender Firewall to provide for additional authentication for network traffic. Now in an on-premise context such as Active Directory, you'll find that Kerberos is used for authentication between devices and also to provide that level of privacy or encryption whilst traffic is moving around the network.
