- DHCP is a great thing when it works well. You set it up on the server, and if you're working with Windows Server on a bigger network, or better yet, if you have a SOL, RAT, or a hole, it does it all for you. However, sometimes things do not go well. Let's see why. One of the things that can happen is that you go to use the internet and it starts acting wonky. So perhaps, maybe you'll have some inconsistent speeds, you'll get some slowdown, or you can't reach other hosts that are on your network. So of course, what do you do? The first thing you do is check your IP settings. So over here, I ran an ipconfig/all. Now, I want to stress that this is all working properly, so I'm going to show you what it would look like if it were not. So my IP address, my IPv4, is 10.0.10.4, and I have a custom subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. And then over here, my DHCP server is the same as my default gateway.
