Software-defined networking (SDN)

- Depending on which vendor you talk with, the definition of software-defined networking or SDN can vary. However, there is one common baseline to all these definitions. Essentially, it's that SDN is not traditional networking. The operations and components of a traditional network are distributed over networks, routers, bridges, and switches, and they sit geographically in separate locations. These devices also decide the path a message will actually use to traverse the network, and SDN uses a centralized software system for routing and switching decisions on a network. Traditional networking is built around three planes, each of which performs a different set of tasks. These planes are the control plane, the data plane, and the management plane. A plane is a logical component of a network architecture. The control plane performs the functions and data of routing and security. A data plane carries the network traffic.…
