- [Instructor] So you've decided on a career in cybersecurity and think you want to be a pen tester. Or, maybe you're already in cybersecurity and looking to make a transition. Either way, you're going to need to know what it is and how do you get into it. Pen testing, short for penetration testing, is defined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as a method of testing where testers target individual components or the application as a whole to determine whether or not vulnerabilities can be exploited to compromise the application, its data, or its environmental resources. Now, that may sound like a lot, but we're going to break it down later on. It's really not that scary. They also define pen testing as a test methodology.
