- [Narrator] As we're storing more and more data, we need to think about how to optimize this storage so that we can keep our resource costs down and our efficiency up. When we talked about archiving, we talked about moving data to cold storage, but what does this really mean? Well, it depends, of course. If you have an on-premises data center, then you probably have some kind of San storage area network that helps to provide reliable, fast storage to multiple servers. It's possible that this sand contains multiple tiers of storage. The data you access often will be on your hot tier, which will be your fastest storage, probably flash. Then data that is accessed less can be relegated onto warm or cold tiers. As you can imagine, the hot tier with flash storage is more expensive, so you only want to store mission critical data there. For example, just the last day's data for certain applications. As time goes on, people will access that data less so it can be moved off of the hot…
