- [Instructor] Microsoft Defender Antivirus or MDAV is what performs the anti-malware protection on our Windows devices and servers. Think of it as that core agent, that core service, that does the actual endpoint protection. Now when we onboarded our devices, that didn't automatically secure them or give them the best Defender Antivirus settings, so we'll be looking at some of the theory and features behind MDAV to get you to that optimal level of protection. To control Defender Antivirus, we can use security settings management in the Defender XDR portal or any of the other management tools we have such as Intune and Group Policy. There is a general order of preference here. If we can do it using a modern tool such as Intune or security settings management, then we should and then revert to older tools like Group Policy if we have to.
