- [Instructor] As a digital designer, how frequently do you consider the psychology of your clients and their customers when creating your own designs? If you're looking to level up your design skills, you are in the right place. In this lesson, we're introducing the psychological framework of Gestalt theory, which explores the ways in which humans instinctively perceive patterns and compositions as whole things rather than just as a collection of individual parts. Gestalt theory was developed in the 1920s by German psychologists in the Berlin School of Psychology, most notably Kurt Koffka, Wolfgang Kohler, and Max Wertheimer. They developed this to describe how humans recognize patterns in their environment and tend to comprehend and perform acts instinctively, such as grouping similar items and simplifying complex structures.
