Using contrast to establish hierarchy
- [Instructor] The first of the 10 principles of design we will explore together is contrast. If you think about what the word contrast means, which is generally comparing two or more things and noticing their differences, you get a rough idea of how it can be used in digital design to create a sense of hierarchy and order with intentional areas of visual interest. For our purposes, contrast is the juxtaposition of opposing elements by way of using different colors, values, directions, lines, shapes, etc. to show emphasis in a design. In other words, when we play with any two or more elements of a design to create an intentional area of contrast, like color and shape, those areas can be used to guide customers toward an intended call-to-action or goal, such as searching for information, purchasing a product or service, or even pressing a button to get started.
