- [Woman] There are a range of material choices for FDM 3D printers. Let's take a look at some of the common and less common materials available. Now I use the term material, but more specifically, these are called thermoplastics, which are a plastic material or polymer that becomes pliable above a certain temperature and then solidifies after cooling. Most consumer-grade 3D printers use spools of plastic called filament,. You'll also find filament packaged in a cartridge for some industrial and consumer-grade machines. The type of thermoplastic you can use are primarily driven by your hardware. There are three main categories. Some machines support the use of a single thermoplastic. Others provide support for a wide variety of plastics. And then a third category won't limit your material choices, but they don't supply specific support either.
