- In 1996, Richard Bartle observed after careful study that people playing a multiplayer game could be divided into four different types according to their preferred actions within the game. This classification scheme became known as the Bartle taxonomy of player types and is often used as a guide for people developing digital, multiplayer, interactive environments, such as a metaverse-based learning experience. The four categories of player preferences are achievers, explorers, socializers and killers. Let's take a deeper look at each one. Some players gravitate toward earning the most points, progressing quickly through various levels, collecting the best inventory items and obtaining other concrete measurements of success within the game environment.
