- There are two professors at Santa Clara University, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, who discovered that when it comes to leaders, if you're going to be perceived as credible what's essential is having a vision for the future. But there's a catch. You can't just cook up a vision and shove it down people's throats. Your team wants to be involved in the process. To be a truly collaborative leader you need to involve your team in the decision making process early enough for it to count. Too many leaders are reactive. And because there's a lot going on and it may not be top of mind for them, they just don't think about how to bring in their team. When it does finally occur to them, the decision, whatever it is, whether it's where to open a new field office or what to call the new product, has pretty much already been made.
