When you have to break your promises

- We've been talking about how to gain credibility as a leader but it's equally important to understand how you lose it. What are the things that if you do them, are almost guaranteed to torpedo the reputation you've built? Here are three things to avoid if you want to be seen as a credible leader. First, failing to follow through. When you're a credible leader, your word is your bond. If you say you're going to do something, you need to make sure it happens unless there is an extreme situation that prevents it. One major reason leaders fail to follow through is actually that they never really wanted to do the thing in the first place. Leaders are just people, and it's human nature, at least sometimes, to be a people pleaser. It's a lot easier to say yes in the moment because you know you'll have to disappoint people or have a hard conversation if you turn them down. But this is a big mistake. If you want to…
