Delivering a high-quality body of work that is difficult for others to replicate is the second mark of an effective solution engineer. Sometimes you're recognized as an expert because of your knowledge, as we just covered, but oftentimes it's the result of unmatchable execution. You can do things that other people cannot do, or you can perform at a level of proficiency that other people cannot match. The doing often distinguishes the expert much more than the knowing. As one example, Major League Baseball players are measured in hundreds of ways; balls and strikes, hits and errors, stolen bases, and home runs, and on and on. Few people are measured more comprehensively. Fans and owners, it turns out, don't care how much a player knows about the sport. They do care, however, about how well the player performs in games night after night. The same is mostly true for solution engineering.
