- Have you left a job interview upset because you couldn't express yourself clearly? Asking for a promotion is similar to preparing for a job interview. In this lesson, I help you leverage assertive communication to discuss your needs. First, consider using assertive communication. Have you watched people express themselves with confidence while respecting others' opinions? That's an example of assertive communication. You can express your opinions, thoughts, and feelings, and stand up for your needs while respecting others. Assertive communication is not aggressive. You can be polite, calm, and positive when you ask for what you need. Assertive communication is no confrontational, and you can use it to say no to a request, begin a conversation or express your feelings.
