- Rules, rules, rules. It sounds so limiting, yet in a sense, without some kind of framework where everyone involved should participate and contribute effectively, people may act in their own individual ways, and things can get chaotic. So how can we reconcile the need for rules without these being a constraint? That's where the lean concept of standardization fits in, while rules are rigid, typically enforced without deviation, where breaking them leads to consequences. Standards, on the other hand, provide a baseline for consistency, but are meant as a baseline, a reference point to evolve through continuous improvement. Think of the following essential standards for running your meetings. First and foremost, know the meeting purpose and desired outcomes, which will set a direction and a path for the meeting from start to finish.
