Setup an Apple ID or iCloud account
- [Instructor] Now let's take a look at how to set up an Apple ID or an iCloud account. Remember, it is possible to set up two separate accounts, but I strongly encourage new users to set up one account that will be used for both Apple ID and iCloud. Now, you could go to the Apple ID website on your computer at appleid.apple.com and create your account here. There's an option here at the top to create your Apple ID, but be aware that if you set up your account here on the web, it's possible that you could miss out on one of the core features of the iCloud service, namely the feature where you get a free email account. Notice this field here prompts you to enter an email address for your account. Now this has to be an existing email address you already have, which will also become your Apple ID address, and there's no option here to generate a new free iCloud email account through Apple. So it's better to set up your new account in the settings on your iPhone or iPad itself if you want to create your Apple ID and iCloud account at the same time. Now, it's possible that when you first set up your iPhone or iPad, you already signed in with or created in Apple ID. Part of the process of setting up your device walks you through the process of doing so. But let's say that you skip that process during the initial setup and take a look at how to do it now. On your iPhone or iPad, you'll locate and tap the Settings app to open it up. At the top of this screen, if you haven't already signed in or set up an account, you'll see this Sign In To Your iPhone area. We'll tap that and that takes us to the Apple ID screen where you can sign in with an existing account, or if you don't yet have an account, you can tap here where it says Don't Have An Apple ID Or Forgot It? And if you don't have an account yet, tap Create Apple ID. And then you'll be a walk through this process. On the first screen, you'll enter your name and birthdate, and we'll scroll back a couple of years here. Doesn't really matter. In this case, I just wanted to get to this next screen here, and that brings us to the step where you need to provide an email address. But notice here that you get the option to create a new iCloud address. Notice the suggested email in my case is garrick.chow@icloud.com. Now, you're free to change the first part of the address if you like, but the point is because we're creating this Apple ID on the iPhone, we get the chance to create an iCloud account at the same time, which we don't get through the Apple ID website. Now, you can still use an existing email address as your Apple ID if you want to, but again, I think it's a good idea to create both your Apple ID and your iCloud account at the same time. It just makes things a little less confusing and complicated, and you'll use that iCloud email address whenever you sign into iCloud or your Apple ID. After you create your Apple ID, you'll remain signed into your iPhone or iPad, and it will be this account that you use to access services like the App Store, the Music app, the iCloud backup preferences, or any other place that requires you to sign in with an Apple ID. Throughout the rest of this course, we'll occasionally come across features that require an Apple ID or an iCloud account, so be sure to set one up if you want to use those features.
