Plenty is a high tech vertical farming startup in San Francisco that grows up to 350 times more produce in a given area than conventional farming, and it does this while using less than 5% as much water. So what's Plenty's innovation? Grow plants in vertical farms inside buildings, rather than on the open field. LED lights act as substitutes for natural sunlight. Nutrient rich water solution eliminates the need for soil. And climate control regulates temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels. Given the design of vertical farms, they can be built inside cities or even deserts, places that we would not normally associate with farming. As a result, vertical farms also cut down dramatically on supply chain costs. Not surprisingly, in 2024, Time magazine included Plenty in its list of America's top green tech companies.
