What is a design token?
- [Instructor] A common UX best practice is the use of design tokens when it comes to creating a design system. From a developer's point of view, design tokens are indeed a single source of truth. From a strictly design point of view, design tokens are basically names used to express design decisions in a language to communicate design decisions between developers and designers. If we look at an app, it can be broken down into four distinct composition areas. An app is made up of its features. Those features are composed of interfaces. Those interfaces are composed of components such as this button, and components are composed of design tokens. Design tokens were originally developed by Salesforce as a way to enforce design consistency across all of their platforms. Their concept caught on because, through the use of tokens, design decisions are able to be stored in a platform-agnostic manner. These would be such…
