- When I first created this course in 2014, Bitcoin's energy waste was a concern, but not yet a problem. When I revised it in 2018, it was a problem, but not a widely acknowledged one. As I record this version a few years later, it's a clear and present danger, and it's not certain that it'll be fixed or how quickly or how much. So my challenge to you is to research the current state of energy usage by cryptocurrencies. Go to a search engine and type in something like cryptocurrency energy consumption. Then restrict it so you only see pages updated in the last week or month or year. Click links that interest you and start reading. Alternately, go back to your search engine and look through the relevant news stories. Bitcoin was launched in 2008 and 2009, but it didn't really get started in until the 2010s.
