Working locally
- [Instructor] There are two ways that you can work with a WordPress website. The first way is to work remotely. To do this you will need to obtain hosting and then depending on your hosting company, you'll need to find out what sorts of support they offer for installing WordPress. We have some courses in the library that cover this more in detail. If that is what you're interested in doing, please refer to the following movies for more information. The other method is to work locally, which is what we'll be doing in this course. Local host is the server that is used by your own computer. Your website will function just as it does on the internet and you can incorporate dynamic features like connecting to a database. This is great for developing locally on your machine and works well for testing. The downside is its only available locally on your own computer. In order to install WordPress locally, you're going to need a few things. For the website that we'll be building, we will need a local server environment that can be installed under your operating system and a fresh copy of WordPress, along with the Elementor plugin of course. You have a couple options for local web servers. Some of the most popular are MAMP, WAMP, XAMPP and local, which is what we're going to be using. Basically all of these are free applications that you can install on your Mac or windows computer and they'll give you access to a local Apache server. And this is an open source server. Any of these options are fine. If you already have them installed, you can go ahead and use that. Local by Flywheel is a free program that allows you to easily set up a WordPress environment on your local computer. It's a simple software solution that allows you to run a local development environment for WordPress. It takes care of creating the database and installing WordPress along with the default themes and plugins. It's a really easy one step solution. If you are working remotely or already have a local solution set up and you're happy with it, then go ahead and set up WordPress on your environment and skip to the video on configuring WordPress. If you want to learn about a new way in which to work locally with WordPress, then join me in the next lesson where I show you how local works.
