Layer mask techniques
Let's see how we can combine color and black and white in the same image and I'll also show you some techniques for working with masks. This is where we're going to begin and I would like my finished composition to be square. So I'll start by tapping C to access the crop tool and then making sure that I'm cropping to a 1 to 1 aspect ratio. Before I perform the crop, make sure that Delete Cropped Pixels is not selected so that having performed the crop, I can then come to my Move tool and make any adjustments that I might deem necessary working within that crop shape. Now I want to make a selection and to do this I'll tap W to choose one of my selection tools. Click on Select Subject. Then to refine this selection, go to Select and Mask. In this case I don't want the stalk selected so I will come and choose my Quick Selection tool within Select and Mask.
