What are needs?
- Before we can explore needs together, we have to get on the same page about what a need is and what it isn't. One psychological model of needs that I find simple and relatable comes from Clayton Alderfer. In his model, he puts needs into three basic categories: existence, relatedness, and growth. Existence needs have to do with our basic and physiological needs as humans. Things like food, water, rest, shelter, and security. Relatedness needs refer to things like belonging and love in friendships and intimate relationships as well as respect and feelings of accomplishment in our work and life. Finally, growth needs refer to the needs humans have around creativity, self understanding, and reaching their personal fulfillment.
