Connecting a USB device to a guest
- [Instructor] Using a virtual machine, we aren't limited only to emulated or virtualized hardware. We can pass USB devices that are plugged into the host machine directly through to the guest. Let's take a look at this using a USB drive. We could just as easily use a USB webcam or a printer or a USB network adapter or a security key or something like that. And I'll shut down my Guest OS. Then I'll go into the Settings for the guest, and I'll choose USB. I'll plug my USB drive into the host computer. In the Guest Machine Settings, I can choose to use a USB 1.1, USB 2, or USB 3 Controller. USB 1.1 is the default, and to enable the other two, we need to have installed the VirtualBox Extension Pack. I did that earlier, but if you see an error when you select two or three here, you'll need to check to make sure you have the extension pack installed. You can still use USB without them but only the slow USB 1.1 standard.…
