- Think back to a recent successful process improvement in your organization. Did solving one inefficiency create unexpected challenges elsewhere? Did it change tasks and jobs in a way that improved productivity, but degraded the employee experience? This pattern becomes even more critical as we use agentic AI systems to revise and design our work processes. My research across industries reveals a consistent pattern. While AI implementations create powerful local efficiencies, they often redistribute inefficiencies across the broader work system in ways that can be harder to detect and address. Understanding this local systemic trade-off is crucial for effective process development when software can plan, act, and creatively adapt over longer and longer stretches of time.
